An interesting area for 4G and beyond lies in the concept of coordinated multipoint (CoMP) where base stations cooperate in sending and receiving data from the UE. Interference in this case ends up being exploited (like single user MIMO). There are still huge challenges to be solved for CoMP for it to be a viable commercial concept. One of these challenges is the fact that all cooperating Base stations have to have knowledge of all channels. This is an easy problem to solve if the communication backbone between base stations is assumed to have infinite bandwidth and the link has zero delay.

Hi maher,

I am having 8 years of working experience in the Wireless communication(Mobile). worked in the various RAT like GSM/GPRS, UMTS, LTE.
I have completed my Master in communication systems from a reputed university (Anna University) in India.
Now I am very much interested to do PH.D. My Area of interest would be in LTE ( Radio Access terminals). But not sure from where to start. Could you please share your thoughts/ideas. It would be very useful for my jump start. I would like to know which are the grey areas for research ( where i could i find some good problems to solve). I would really appreciate if i get your personal mail Id.

You have chosen the right area to be in: There are still a lot to be done. It gets pretty interesting if you think of this problem in three dimensions: time, frequency and space (i.e. MIMO). The challenge is how to come up with close-to-optimum (according to a certain criterion) while maintaining an acceptable real-time performance using existing hardware.

@ Anis:

You have chosen the right research area. Make sure you check my latest post about useful tips for completing your PhD on time. I will be posting some useful MIMO turorials within the next few weeks. You may find them useful. Thanks for the complement on the web site.

Good luck and please come back.

Congrats Maher, this is a well deserved degree !

Suggest you squeeze a few more publications out of it since you have time for it now. Or better still, a write book applying this research to LTE terminals... my impression of the LTE industry is that it is till behind on the terminal side which needs low power and faster processing algorithms.
